Ideally, you can charm a personal guide to take you to whatever your goal is in the dungeon.įor 2nd I'd take ESP over Wizard Lock. I know that's generally considered an offensive spell, but it is so versatile and useful for information gathering. (Particularly in 1e where using devices is more advantageous because you're not hampered by those pesky casting times.) Or maybe just a bunch of fighters for henchmen.įor a B/X m-u, I think I'd switch out Hold Portal for Charm Person for first level. This could really work, too if you had some sort of offensive magic item like the appropriate wand, staff or ring. I think that would be a useful guy to have around on a dungeon crawl.Ĭool idea. How's this for a 7th level magic-user who focuses exclusively on utilitarian magic:ġ - detect magic, hold portal, floating disc When suddenly they are stopped dead because they lack a knock or dispel magic, I always chuckle a bit to myself. I've also had fleeing magic-users use it to escape the party by locking a door behind them. In an escape and evasion scenario, Hold Portal is just fine. Well, the disadvantage of WL is that it ties up a level II slot instead of a level I slot. lasting only rounds), and it's not taking the slot for MM or Detect Magic spell.

Otherwise, in my mind it's much more secure (permanent vs. I'm a big fan of WL but never use HP personally, nittanyTbone14, so I'm definitely curious to hear more about how you see EL as a better tactical alternative: the only disad I see for WL is that it's permanent until dispelled, which means if the casting MU dies and the party is running short on Dispel Magics (and the other MUs aren't 4 levels higher), they may not be able to pass through the WL door (save by chopping it down, blasting it, etc.). In most tactical situations, Hold Portal is better. Its not impenetrable but at least you can know if its been tampered with easily! This is really the best use for the spell, IMHO, other than perhaps your stronghold.
